What It Does
The tank separates solids from liquid. The drainfield does the treatment. Effluent leaves the tank, distributes through the field, and percolates down through unsaturated soil where bacteria break down remaining contaminants before the water reaches groundwater.
That process needs soil that drains at the right rate, and enough depth of it before hitting a limiting condition like bedrock or the seasonal water table.
Michigan’s Constraints by Region
Southeast Michigan: clay and water tables. Heavy clay drains too slowly, so effluent backs up rather than percolating. High seasonal water tables reduce the usable depth beneath the field. Together they limit system options across Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and neighboring counties — and they’re why the region runs highest in the state for installation cost.
Northern Lower Peninsula: generally favorable. Sandy soils percolate well and conventional systems are more often permittable. The variable is proximity to water, since so much of the region’s development sits near lakes and streams.
Upper Peninsula: bedrock and frost. Thin soil over rock leaves inadequate depth for treatment in many places. Frost depths exceeding 48 inches add engineering considerations that downstate systems don’t face.

Protecting What You Have
Keep vehicles, structures and heavy landscaping off the field and off any reserve area. Direct roof and driveway runoff elsewhere. Watch water use.
A drainfield that’s protected and served by a tank pumped on schedule can last decades. One that’s compacted, overloaded, or fed solids by a neglected tank fails much sooner — and replacement is the expensive end of septic ownership.
Signs Yours Is Struggling
Soggy ground or standing water over the field, sewage odor outdoors, unusually lush grass over the field, and slow drains throughout the house.
Michigan’s seasonal complication: spring thaw saturates ground statewide, and snowmelt can pool over a field that’s perfectly healthy.
